Preliminary Steps
Stability is critical so the first step is to make sure the Pallet and IBC are on a completely even surface. And that there are no fittings or environmental elements that might cause vibrations of the inner bottle, which would de-stabilise the process.
In relation to the attachment of piping, independent, effective supports for each of the shut-off valves, pipes and filters should be in place.

Remember also to open the top screw cap at the outset, to allow air into the inner bottle, as the emptying process can create a vacuum, which could risk a bottle collapse.
The Emptying Process for IBC’s
The IBC is usually emptied via the bottom discharge valve. This enables the emptying process to take place gravimetrically and no additional pressure is necessary.
If necessary, a pump can be used and connected to the discharge valve but make sure that the pumping equipment is supported independently.
A third option is to use the top opening or via an additional 2” plug and with the use of a pump or dip-tube.
To start the process;
- Remove the screwcap, and store it safely
- Remove the foil or peelable valve seal from the discharge valve (no tools will be needed as they will simply pull off manually)
- Open the valve by turning the handle in the direction of the container
- Then push the safely clip up to the top (the lower part of the clip will now be hidden)
- Pull the handle forward until it touches the valve housing (and no further!)



When the process is complete, the valve needs to be closed securely as quickly as possible, effectively reversing the opening procedure i.e.
- Ensure now that the safety clip is in the top position and the end of the clip isn’t visible
- Turn the handle anti-clockwise, as far as the valve housing
- Push it down, until it is level wit the top of the handle
Completing the Process Safely
Cleanliness is the most critical consideration once the IBC is empty. No remnants of the filling product should be left on the discharge valve, as it could crystalise or gel inside the valve. Also to avoid any contamination of the outlet valve, the screw cap should be tightly replaced after the emptying process. So, in short
- Thoroughly clean the discharge valve
- Replace the screw cap securely
