The packaging industry has a challenge. Everyone wants more sustainable solutions, but nobody wants to sacrifice performance, cost-efficiency, or reliability to get there. It’s a tough balance to strike.

The good news is that CurTec reckons they’ve cracked it – with their new ECO LITE drum range – and the specs are genuinely impressive.

What Makes ECO LITE Different?

If you’re familiar with CurTec’s Nestable Drum (and if you work with industrial packaging, you probably are), think of ECO LITE as its more environmentally conscious sibling. Same family, smarter design.

The big headline? ECO LITE drums offer the lowest carbon footprint in their class – that’s among HDPE drums for secondary use with capacities between 30 and 60 litres. Not just marginally lower, either. This is a genuine step forward.

The 30% Bio-Based Difference

Here’s where it gets interesting. ECO LITE drums use a blend of 30% bio-based plastic and 70% fossil-based material. Compare that to the standard Nestable Drum, which uses 100% virgin plastic.

That 30% might not sound massive, but it adds up quickly when you’re talking about production at scale. Multiply it across thousands of drums, and you’re looking at a significant reduction in fossil resource dependency.

Food grade

The thing about more sustainable drums is that often they are not food grade. Becasuse they use recycled plastic, many are simply not suitable. The Eco Lite is different. which really helps them stand out from the rest of their class.

Lighter, Leaner, More Efficient

CurTec hasn’t just swapped out some materials and called it a day. They’ve re-engineered the entire design – and it shows.

Weight reduction comes from thinner walls and smoother lines. No unnecessary bulk, no excessive features. Just what’s needed to maintain strength and durability. The result? Less plastic used per drum, lower transport weight, reduced energy in production.

The clever bit is that they’ve done this without compromising structural integrity. These aren’t flimsy drums – they’re UN certified for hazardous materials, which is essential if you need a significant level of re-assurance in this context.

Redesigned Handles

One of those design tweaks may seem obvious now it’s been done – CurTec has replaced the mounted handles on the Nestable Drum with moulded handgrips on the ECO LITE.

What difference does this make? Four things:

  • Less plastic
  • Less energy in manufacturing
  • Lower weight
  • Reduced cost

And you still get the same comfort and strength when you’re actually lifting the thing. Sometimes the best innovations are the simplest ones.

Moisture Control That Works

Another excellent improvement relates to moisture control and if you’ve ever dealt with moisture ingress in drum storage, you’ll appreciate this upgrade.

The new screw lid has an integrated seal instead of the traditional rubber gasket. It’s a more effective barrier against moisture getting in – and CurTec has the ASTM standard test results to prove it.

This matters more than you might think. Moisture contamination can ruin products, create quality control nightmares, and cost you money. An integrated seal that performs better? That’s solving a real problem.

The Nestable Advantage Stays

ECO LITE drums keep the tapered design that made the Nestable range so popular for logistics.

Empty drums nest inside each other, which means:

  • More drums per pallet
  • Fewer transport movements
  • Lower warehousing space requirements
  • Reduced logistics costs
  • Smaller carbon footprint in your supply chain

And despite that tapered shape, they’re stable when stacked. The smart design of the screw lid and drum base ensures they won’t topple – even when you’re stacking them high in a warehouse.

The Range

CurTec is launching ECO LITE in four sizes:

30 litre (7.9 US gallons) – Product code 7630
40 litre (10.6 US gallons) – Product code 7640
50 litre (13.2 US gallons) – Product code 7650
60 litre (15.9 US gallons) – Product code 7660

There’s also a 228mm sealing strip available (product code 7800) for additional security when you need it.

UN Certification Available

Shipping hazardous materials? ECO LITE drums can be supplied with UN certification, making them suitable for dangerous goods transport where regulations require it.

Why This Actually Matters

Look, we’ve all seen “sustainable” packaging that’s just greenwashing with a nice logo slapped on it. ECO LITE isn’t that.

This is a product where sustainability improvements have been built into the fundamental design – not added as an afterthought. Less material. Bio-based content. Lighter weight. Better moisture control. Lower logistics impact. UN certification where needed.

Every one of those elements reduces environmental impact whilst improving performance or cutting costs. That’s the sweet spot – where doing the right thing for the planet also makes business sense.
